Whether its genesis was childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, long term verbal abuse, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, trauma experienced/witnessed in war or the witness/experience of terrorism – traumatic experience overwhelms and disables us in profound ways.
We know that trauma affects us not only emotionally, but physically — as it alters both body and brain — with the capacity to place us in a fight or flight hyper-vigilant reactive state 24/7. It impacts the way we relate to others, as our ability to trust often diminishes radically. Thus the after effects of traumatic experience are life changing. We often learned ways of coping that saved us during and immediately following the trauma but no longer serve us today.
Together, as you and I build our therapeutic relationship we will approach your experience gently, finding new ways to respond to old triggers, memories and relationships.
